There are so many species of hardwoods, and each year, more of them become available as flooring options.

Hardwood Grain

This is the fourth installment of 7 Tips on How to Select Hardwood Flooring which can also be downloaded as a free eBook at www.carpetconceptsfl.com.

Each species of wood has a unique hardwood grain that is essential to its appearance.

Some woods have lots of graining and knot holes. In these types of woods, you’ll notice that…

…each plank can be remarkably different from the next. You wouldn’t see too many planks that might be identical. In fact, even the overall color of the plank itself will vary!

Variation and Variety

These hardwood grain patterns can be very beautiful. Many homeowners prefer them because they are so different from laminate floors (which constantly repeat patterns). Having variation and variety is a clear signal that the floor is real hardwood – and not an imitation.

However, there are also many wood species which are equally beautiful, yet more uniform in their appearance and color. If you would be bothered by a strange pattern or wide variation in color, then you should probably choose a hardwood that is more consistent in its appearance.

Online Photos Can Help

It can be tricky to guess which hardwoods will vary a lot and which will not.

Sometimes a small sample in the flooring store won’t reflect the real range of variation that’s possible in a species of wood. It can be helpful to search online for pictures of entire rooms that are covered in a particular species of hardwood.
