Carpet Warranty

This is the sixth installment of 12 Things to Know About Buying Carpet which can also be downloaded as a free eBook.

Buying a new carpet, whether in one room or for your whole house, can be a significant investment. Many carpet buyers want to skip the necessary homework and think that buying a carpet with a great-sounding carpet warranty will protect them.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. You will be making a mistake if you base your decision to purchase a carpet on the warranty being offered. It sounds impressive, but a 25 year warranty really doesn’t mean that you’re getting a great piece of carpet.

Why not?

Read the fine print. Almost all carpet warranties are extremely limited. They contain many kinds of exclusions which will prevent you from being able to replace a carpet. Many are also prorated, which means that you won’t have full coverage if you’ve had your carpet for several years.

The best way to protect yourself from a faulty carpet is to buy one from a reputable retailer. A good local business will be responsive to your concerns. In the event that you do have a problem, the carpet manufacturer will inevitably refer you back to the retailer who you used. If the retailer isn’t interested in helping solve your problem, you could get stuck. Dealing directly with the manufacturer doesn’t usually result in an easy or reasonable solution for most people. A good retailer will solve your problems.

So, what’s the deal with a carpet warranty then? At the end of the day, there are many factors that impact the functionality of your carpet- from the original quality of the piece, to the installation, to your role in keeping it clean and vacuumed. The warranty should be evaluated as part of the purchasing decision, but bear in mind that it may be more about marketing than a genuine statement of confidence from the manufacturer.12 Things to Know About Buying Carpet
