Nylon Carpet vs Polyester Carpet

This is the eighth installment of 12 Things to Know About Buying Carpet which can also be downloaded as a free eBook.

Nylon and polyester are both types of materials that comprise the individual yarns in a piece of carpet. Don’t spend too long worrying about the differences between these two types of carpets. Both can be good carpet options.

Many times, nylon is more readily available because it’s such an easy fabric to work with. However, polyester has undergone lots of improvements in the last several years, so you might be surprised that the quality is better than you remember since you last purchased a carpet.

Sometimes density, backing, construction, and the amount of twisting are more important than the fiber itself. There’s good nylon and bad nylon, just as there is good polyester and bad polyester.

If you do choose a polyester carpet, you’ll want to opt for one that’s got a high density of fibers and a medium to high pile. This will help your carpet stay fluffy and not get “crushed” because the polyester fiber isn’t quite a durable as the nylon ones.

As for durability, you can’t compare them without putting a specific sample of nylon up against a specific sample of polyester. There should be ratings on the back that will help you establish the durability of individual pieces of fabric.

If you’ve got all those details down, there’s an additional new product called PET polyester. PET stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate (try saying that three times fast!). This is the kind of carpet that we referenced above as being made from recycled bottles. But don’t assume that these carpets are rough or “plastic-y”. In fact, they are some of the softest polyester carpets available. The fibers’ former life as a plastic bottle gives carpet improved strength, incredible stain resistance and better resistance to abrasion and wear.12 Things to Know About Buying Carpet

You might consider putting a polyester or PET carpet in a playroom or children’s bedroom where you would expect a lot of stains.
