This is the ninth installment of 12 Things to Know About Buying Carpet which can also be downloaded as a free eBook.

There are so many advantages of carpet over other types of flooring, but one problem area that families focus on is carpet stains. If you’re living a normal life, some stains are all but inevitable. No one is perfect! Some stains are easier to remove than others, but it’s also important to know what kind of stain protection you’ll be getting when you purchase a new carpet.

A single person living alone may not have the same criteria for stain resistance as a family with multiple children and pets. But no matter what your living situation, be sure you know what you’re paying for.

Although there are lots of offers for stain resistance warranties on the market, be a savvy shopper. Many of those warranties are only window dressing because they exclude many common kinds of stains from the warranty!

Stain-resistant carpet is treated with chemicals so that it resists dyes and other stains. But take note: stain-resistant does not mean stain-free. There are substances that can penetrate even the best stain barriers that might be applied to carpets. This is why you’ll find exclusions in warranties.

What kind of stains are usually excluded? Bleach, acid, hair dye, makeup, acne treatments, feces, and vomit are some of the common culprits.

You can help your carpet stay in good shape by cleaning spills as soon as they happen. If you do have kids, pets, or a very stain-prone household, consider purchasing a darker carpet to hide some of the inevitable stains. If your carpet comes with stain removal instructions, read them carefully. 12 Things to Know About Buying CarpetUsing recommended cleaning solutions may help you with many common carpet stains that can be removed easily.
