The day of your hardwood floor installation is the single most important day in the life of your floor.

Hardwood Floor Care

This is the seventh installment of 7 Tips on How to Select Hardwood Flooring
which can also be downloaded as a free eBook at
Homeowners can save money on the installation by doing it by themselves. However…
…It’s absolutely essential that you follow the instructions to the letter or you could wind up costing yourself money in the long run if the floor is improperly installed.

If you opt for using a professional installer, they will know how to use the proper adhesive or installation techniques. They will test for moisture, examine the subfloor and troubleshoot any problem areas. Remember to demand proof from your professional that they are fully licensed and insured. This is the best way to guarantee an A+ installation.

If you’re investing money in a hardwood floor, you want it to be done right! Don’t economize if you aren’t confident in your ability to successfully complete the hardwood floor installation.

Care and Maintenance

Once complete, your floor will need very little maintenance. Place felt pads under furniture legs, to avoid scratches from shifting chairs, couches and desks.

Remember to dust, sweep, and vacuum regularly. A Swiffer brand duster is gentle enough to be used on hardwoods. Don’t be tempted to use any products that are indicated for vinyl or tiles floors, and don’t use a damp mop at any time.

Use rugs in high traffic areas, near doors and in hallways. Be aware that over time, the UV rays from sunlight can cause color changes on a hardwood floor. Areas covered by rugs may not change color at the same rate, so keep curtains closed in areas where this is a concern.

After several years, you may notice that your wood floor could use a facelift. If it’s dull or scratched, you may benefit from refinishing or resurfacing your floor. Depending on the size of the area covered by your wood floors, you may be able to hire a professional refinisher for only a few hundred dollars. After that, you will be amazed that your floors will look as good as new.
